Phanom Rung Temple

The Phnom Rung temple is one of the most beautiful and important Khmer temples in Thailand which set on the top of Phnom Rung hill, an extinct volcano. This place was a religious sanctuary dedicated to the god Shiva. It is symbolizes mount Kailasa, the heavenly abode of Shiva, it is originally a Hindu religious site and later became a Buddhist .

Phanom Rung is a magnificent example of ancient Khmer art and architecture. Dating mostly from the  10th – 13th centuries and constructed out of  pink sandstone and laterite, with the stonework elaborately carved. This is a grand and majestic Khmer site over a thousand years old. The buildings are lined all the way to the main tower which is a large one with a square base and facing east. The designs on the tower, columns, doorway, and lintels are exquisite, most telling a story of gods in Hinduism. Each building has descriptive designs telling people the purpose for its construction, its usefulness and the beliefs of ancient people.

We’re belief that in the 12th century, Narendraditaya, member of the Mahidharapura dynasty which reigned over this land built this temple and became a hermit at Phanom Rung Temple.

The ancient wisdom is amazing. A part from the huge and beautiful architecture of Phanom Rung Sanctuary, not everyone knows that there is astonishing calculations with regards to date and time. In different seasons, when the sun rises and sun set , it will shine through all 15 door frames in surprising alignment. All the door entrance are aligned in a straight line to let through the sunlight every year.
