Phimai Temple

The Phimai Stone Sanctuary is located in Phimai District, Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat) Province. This Khmer style sanctuary is considered the largest Buddhist monument in Thailand. In the center of the Phimai Sanctuary stands a large Prang which is made of white lime stone and sandstone. The prang itself is built on a rectangular base which has re-entrant angles at the corners. The building has been extended to the south. Unlike other Khmer monuments in north eastern Thailand which mostly face the east, the main prang of the Phimai Sanctuary faces the south, presumably directed to the main route which runs from the Khmer Kingdom.

The carvings on the pediments of the prasat illustrate religious myths and episodes of Indian epics such as a battle scene from the Ramayana epic, the Shiva dancing and Shiva and his wife, Uma riding on a bull. The sanctuary is accurately constructed based on the Khmer architectural style. The main chedi is surrounded by a gallery next to which is the inner courtyard where the other two prang and one additional structure stand. One of the minor prang facing the east is Prang Bhromathat. The rectangular main prang built of laterite has re-entrant angles at the corners; the structure is believed to have been initiated in the reign of King Jayavarman VII (1220 -1222 A.D.). Inside the building, a stone sculpture of a man in sitting posture. It is believed to be the statue of the King himself.
Another structure discovered within the inner courtyard is a red sandstone prang which is normally known as Prang Hin Daeng. The prang, facing the west, stands on the right of the main sanctuary. It is built on a square base with re-entrant angles. The monument is also believed to have been built at the command of King Jayavarman VII. Behind the Prang Hin Daeng is a Brah man shrine. It most likely served as a place for conducting religious rites since a few small stone lingas were found inside.

Surrounding the gallery are two other walls. On the inner grounds between the gallery and the walls are 4 ponds placed in four directions; they are known as Barai. On the vast lawn, lintels depicting episodes of Hindu myths are also exhibited. The stories depicted include one telling of the deity, being helped by the ogre, in performing the Churning of the Ocean Ceremony in order to make a magic potion; the pictures of Shiva and his wife, Uma riding on their cow, Nandi; and Vishnu standing on his garuda. These lintels can date back to the middle of the 12th century A.D.
Outside the walls surrounding the gallery of the prang is an ancient remains where 4-5 bronze coins were discovered, so that this building is understood to be the treasury. However, the place could also have been a waiting chamber functioning as the resting place for the King or travellers. The chamber is popularly known as Dharmasala.

Muang Tam Temple

Muang Tam Temple is located near the foot of the hill of Phanom Rung Temple are the Khmer ruins of Muang Tam. This  Hindu  religious  sanctuary  was built  in  the  11th – 12th centuries according to the belief of Shiva sect  of Hinduism.

Muang  Tam  is  not  the  original  name, but  was  given by the local  population as  a way of comparing it to the nearby site of  Prasat Phnom Rung. The latter is situated on a high hill while Muang Tam is in the plain. This Castle has a plan which correlated to the beliefs relating to Khmer religious sites about the centre of the universe which is connected to the sacred religious places. This belief is still very much important to the community today. From the physical characteristics of the land around the Muang Tam sanctuary, it has been found that the land is fertile due to the lava of the volcano. This is good for agriculture. These show that the community on the foot hill of Phanom Rung Mountain was one of the big communities with prosperity and importance.

Three different types of materials were used in the construction of  this sanctuary namely brick, late rite and sandstone. The sanctuary is rectangular in shape and measures 120 by 127 m. It faces the east and comprises the following buildings.

Phanom Rung Temple

The Phnom Rung temple is one of the most beautiful and important Khmer temples in Thailand which set on the top of Phnom Rung hill, an extinct volcano. This place was a religious sanctuary dedicated to the god Shiva. It is symbolizes mount Kailasa, the heavenly abode of Shiva, it is originally a Hindu religious site and later became a Buddhist .

Phanom Rung is a magnificent example of ancient Khmer art and architecture. Dating mostly from the  10th – 13th centuries and constructed out of  pink sandstone and laterite, with the stonework elaborately carved. This is a grand and majestic Khmer site over a thousand years old. The buildings are lined all the way to the main tower which is a large one with a square base and facing east. The designs on the tower, columns, doorway, and lintels are exquisite, most telling a story of gods in Hinduism. Each building has descriptive designs telling people the purpose for its construction, its usefulness and the beliefs of ancient people.

We’re belief that in the 12th century, Narendraditaya, member of the Mahidharapura dynasty which reigned over this land built this temple and became a hermit at Phanom Rung Temple.

The ancient wisdom is amazing. A part from the huge and beautiful architecture of Phanom Rung Sanctuary, not everyone knows that there is astonishing calculations with regards to date and time. In different seasons, when the sun rises and sun set , it will shine through all 15 door frames in surprising alignment. All the door entrance are aligned in a straight line to let through the sunlight every year.
